Report on LED Lighting Conclave – May 3-5, 2010
Bureau of Energy efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India in association with Elcoma have prepared various plans to promote the most energy efficient lighting source. As a first step, it was decided to launch a LED program for stake holders from various Central and State Government to increase awareness and understanding of LED Lighting concepts and applications. Side by side, hold an Exhibition and live demonstration of LED Lighting to be organized. As a follow up, an awareness program will be launched through state seminars, media, etc. During this initiative, emphasis will be given to few important product categories like Secondary Street Lighting, Down-lights in the showrooms, General Lighting for commercial use, LED Lamp to replace Incandescent Lamp in domestic segment, introduction of solar lantern for rural consumer and replace all traffic signal lighting with LED.
The National Conclave for Energy Efficient LED Lighting was organized from 3rd to 5th May 2010 in New Delhi, India. The conclave included two days workshop, three days exhibition and live demonstration in the evening. Besides, on 4th May, an interactive networking was organized between the buyers, importers and exporters to finalize business propositions.
LED manufacturers from India and abroad participated in all the events. The workshop was well attended by more than 426 delegates from India and abroad. About 30 LED companies put up their stalls at the two exhibition halls.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Girish Pradhan, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power. In his key note address, Mr. Pradhan informed that the Government of India has drawn an ambitious plan to promote LED Lighting in India. He said that the policy document will be released soon. Earlier, Mr. Shyam Sujan, Secretary General, ELCOMA introduced the VIPs and also informed on the total plans prepared by ELCOMA in launching LED Lighting in India. Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency made an announcement that the Bureau will take up the task of bringing in awareness on energy conservation and promote LED Lighting concept both in domestic as well as the commercial sector. Elcoma President, Mr. Sunil Sikka welcomed the delegates as well as the VIPs from the government departments, while Mr. Rajeev Chopra, Vice-President, Elcoma registered a vote of thanks. The highlight of the opening session was the launch of a domestic LED Bulb, the pharox, which was presented by Mr. Manoj Verma, Vice-President, Crompton Greaves and was lit by the Chief Guest Mr. Girish Pradhan. Mr. H. S. Mamak, Adviser to Elcoma gave details on the planning by Elcoma in bringing LED Lighting to India. During the two day workshop, presentations were made on various topics on LED concepts, applications, lighting designs, technical specifications, quality standards etc. The agenda is attached to give information and future developments. In the exhibition, which was inaugurated by Dr. Ajay Mathur, DG, BEE, various LED products were put up on display from manufacturers from India and abroad. A large number of stake holders visited the 3 days exhibition. The list of visitors is large which included government senior officers from various departments, both central as well state government. There were representatives from various municipalities, PWDs, local bodies, utilities, energy conservation departments, Airport authority, Railways, Metro Corporation, State Energy Development Authorities etc. Besides manufacturers, retailers, architects, designers, students etc also visited the exhibition in large numbers.
For the first time 4 of the “big 5” chip manufacturers participated in an Indian exhibition to inform and promote their LED strengths – Lumileds, Osram, Nichia and Seoul-Semiconductors presented their latest high efficiency LEDs.
As a commitment, the conclave will be extended to 4 major cities in India, i.e. Chandigarh, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkatta before the end of this year. These conclaves will have similar program with a workshop for 2 days, exhibition for 3 days and networking etc.
